Heating · Heat pumps

Heat pumps designed around your house.

A heat pump can keep a British home warm through winter, but only if it is designed for that house. We calculate the heat loss room by room, size the radiators and cylinder to match, and handle the grant paperwork for eligible homes.

What’s included

The work, done properly.

  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation
  • Outdoor unit siting, including noise and planning checks
  • Radiator upgrades for lower flow temperatures
  • Hot water cylinder sized for heat pump operation
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme application where eligible
  • Commissioning, controls setup and a clear handover

Signs you need this

  • Your gas or oil boiler is nearing the end of its life
  • You are off the gas grid on oil, LPG or electric storage heaters
  • You have improved the insulation and want lower-carbon heating
  • A renovation lets you upgrade radiators or add underfloor heating at the same time

Heat pumps are most efficient at low flow temperatures, so they warm a house steadily rather than in short, hot bursts. Many radiators in older homes were sized for a boiler running much hotter, which is why a proper design often swaps a few for larger ones. A heat pump fitted without that work has to run hotter to keep up, and its running costs climb.

Victorian terraces and 1930s semis can both run well on a heat pump. The question is not the age of the house but how much heat it loses and whether the radiators can deliver enough at lower temperatures. The survey answers that before you commit to anything.

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently offers a £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump for owners replacing fossil-fuel heating, including landlords and small businesses. The MCS-certified installer applies, the grant comes off the quote, and the property needs a valid EPC. Scotland has its own grants and loans through Home Energy Scotland. Rules change, so check the latest on GOV.UK; we confirm what applies when we survey.

How it works

01

Survey

Heat loss, insulation, radiators, electrics and where the outdoor unit can go.

02

Design and quote

Heat pump size, radiator changes, cylinder and controls, with any grant shown on the quote.

03

Install

Outdoor unit, cylinder, pipework and radiator changes, with the heating off for as little time as we can manage.

04

Commission and hand over

Flow temperatures set, controls explained and paperwork completed.

  • Gas Safe registeredEvery gas job is done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
  • MCS-certified heat pumpsRequired for Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants.
  • F-Gas certifiedAir conditioning and refrigerant work done to the regulations.
  • Fully insuredPublic liability cover, with certificates for freeholders and agents.

Questions

Air source heat pumps, answered.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in winter?

A correctly designed system is sized for the coldest weather your area typically sees. It feels different, steady warmth rather than hot radiators, but the rooms should hold the temperature you set.

Do I need to replace all my radiators?

Rarely all of them. The heat loss survey shows which rooms need a larger radiator to work at heat pump temperatures. Often it is a handful, not the whole house.

How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work?

In England and Wales, the installer applies for the grant once you accept the quote, and it is taken off the price. You need to own the property, have a valid EPC and be replacing fossil-fuel heating. The amount and rules can change, so we confirm the current position when we quote.

Can I have a heat pump in a flat or a listed building?

Sometimes. Flats often need freeholder consent and somewhere suitable outside for the unit, and listed buildings and conservation areas usually need consent or planning permission. We check what applies before we quote.
